Unstated Virtues

Farmers probably don’t walk around the farm and think about the virtues they have expressed or used that day. After being away from farm life for a while, I thought about the lessons learned there. The values that shaped my life. The first ones were appreciation for order, attention to detail, and awareness of the farming process.

The value of process in agriculture. Just take one crop and think of all the parts that go into that harvest. First, understanding what the soil needs, then preparing the ground, and what crop is being planted, seed to order, fertilizer and fuel needs. That’s not including equipment, your time, and knowledge. Then comes the requirement of patience. Going through thunderstorms, possible high winds, hail, or the dreaded drought. Or insects or some type of fungus shows up. At this point, you need lots of faith and to be reduced to humility.
