| Cameron awaits Brockovich's "answers" |
|
Erin Brockovich has held true to her word and is returning to Cameron next Wednesday. According to one resident she has found a problem and is coming back to explain the options.
I would love to tell you exactly what that problem is but the resident didn't call me or tell KMBC. I guess that would have taken away some of the dramatic effect. Actually this resident doesn't even call us anymore because we don't deliver the results I guess they want. KMBC does....that result is sensationalism.
This concern over tumors has really polarized our community, sadly. Apparently there is no middle ground on the issue. Some are hell-bent on finding a scapegoat while the other half think there is no problem and this is an unfortunate coincidence. |

| Wacko Phelps' clan to disturb funeral in Cameron |
|
We at the newspaper have learned that the funeral services for Chief Warrant Officer Matthew G. Kelley, who died in Iraq last week, are scheduled to be interrupted and harassed by those unpatriotic and misguided souls from Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church. Not only will it be troubling to think of a soldier's family having to witness that scene in their time of grief but any passerby or child will have to look at signs that contain offensive phrases like "God Hates FAGS."
For those who don't know, Phelps' clan claims that soldiers dying in war, specifically Iraq and Afghanistan are payback from God for America's pro-homosexual stance. To try and draw a comparison between Matthew Kelley's sacrifice for his country and some lunatic's notion that God is mad at the military is ridiculous!
I hope that we can band together and mount a counter-offensive to try and block out these insidious characters. I have a few ideas of non-violent and legal things we can do. I have heard that there is a group of veteran friendly bikers coming to counter the group but I want to mobilize an effort as well. |

| Policy on legal advertising related to the tumor investigation |
|
Apparently I have single handedly derailed the whole tumor investigation because I didn't run one ad announcing a lawyer was going to be in town two weeks ago. Ridiculous.
Let me say, again, why I didn't run the ad.
I didn't run the ad because I have steadfastly written over and over again that we need to be looking for scientific answers. I have said over and over that we need to identify WHAT the problem is and then, if there is any identified problem, CORRECT it. |

| King Carl is ruining my fall |
|
I love the Chiefs....or should I say I love what the Chiefs once were. I have been a fan since well before I moved to Missouri from Arkansas. I picked two teams to root for when I was a kid. Since most of my friends rooted for Dallas I picked their arch rival in the NFC East, Philadelphia and the KC Chiefs. I liked the Arrowhead logo as a youngster.
Now Carl Peterson is ruining one of my childhood loves. It is time for him to go!
If I ran my newspaper like he ran the Chiefs I would have been shown the door a looong time ago. He has fouled up a once proud franchise in every sense of the word. |

I am so sick of politics. I really don't care who wins now...just get it over with already!
Locally I still care, however. I think elections for county commissioners and sheriffs, etc. really mean something to regular people like us. They actually affect our lives.
Congressional races seem to be dirtier than ever....and not just the ones in our state. People seem to be SO concerned with who is elected as our next President but I contend that other than appointment of Supreme Court Justices and the occasional veto, Presidents are pretty much figure heads. |

| Rockwool tumor concern |
|
Here is something I don't understand...
Many people were concerned after Thursday's meeting with the state because, for whatever reason, they did not address the recent spike in tumors just in the Cameron area alone. I can understand why residents might be critical since that same spike in the past ten months is what caused us to become alarmed in the first place.
What I do not understand is the dogged fascination with the former Rockwool plant. The plant ceased production over twenty years ago. If chemicals from insulation were being illegally buried, and there is no evidence that illegal activity happened, then it ceased in the early to mid 80's. |

| Favorable but vague results leave Cameron uneasy |
|
The state says Cameron doesn't have or has never had a high occurrence of either malignant or benign brain tumors. Their figures even depicted that our average in the four county area was lower than the state and national averages most of the time during the study period.
While I personally believe their data and feel better after hearing the findings, I completely understand that there are those who don't. I can see how the state left the door open to doubt in the minds of those who are frightened.
I saw two areas where people can question the data. I also spoke to officials of the state who anonymously gave me some insight to why their information was presented in the manner that might leave some residents concerned. |

| Students or salesmen |
|
When did our children have to beg for an education? When did they have to pound the pavement to ask for dollars to fund activities and extracurriculars?
It seems like our kids are expected to sell and sell just to fund activities that we took for granted when I was a kid.
Now, we all had to work a concession booth or attend a car wash back in "the day" but now it seems like a constant stream of children with sign-up sheets coming to my door. Pizzas, wrapping paper, fruit, trinkets and all sorts of other products. |

| Step away from the ledge |
|
When you turn on the news you hear it. When you read a national newspaper you see it. When you listen to most media it is smacking you in the face. The economy stinks and everyone is tightening their collective belts. So how are small businesses going to survive?
Perhaps they might thrive, or at least hold their own.
Stick with me and I am going to lay out a scenario for how small town America might not be as bad off as you might think. It all starts with the price of gas. Can you believe that? Gas prices might actually come to our rescue. |

About Me
Jamey Honeycutt grew up in Hope, Arkansas (the other man from Hope) and began his news career first by making the news in various scholastic and athletic endeavors. After editing his college newspaper and holding every position known to man at his hometown newspaper, the Hope Star, there was no other choice but to promote the arrogant 23-year-old to the position of publisher of a sister newspaper in Grants, New Mexico. After moving around the county at least three more times (avoiding bill collectors), Jamey moved to the Land Of Milk and Honey (Cameron, Missouri) and has served as publisher for the past six years. Sports, entry level politics, stupid people and home improvement projects are common blog topics.
